Installing a Nanny cam hidden in a fake smoke detector or teddy bear may make you feel like dusting for fingerprints or running a DNA scan, but the feeling of high-tech “spy” equipment may not last. If your camera is analog based, it doesn’t matter how tiny it is, it won’t be convenient. Analog cameras are recorded to VHS cassettes. Yes, they do still make those. VHS is the culprit behind “Be Kind- Please Rewind” stickers that remind us a cassette has to be fast forwarded or rewound through the film before you can see what you want. This means everytime you’d like to check your Nanny cam recordings, you’ll be spending time skimming through the whole tape and constantly maintaining cassette replacement. If you are looking for the cheapest Nanny cam, the inconvenience might be worth it; if you are looking to realistically keep up with your recordings, you may want to pay a little extra and go digital.

At one time, digital Nanny cams were non-existent. When they did appear, they were outside most families’ budgets. But, as we all know, technology improves at an incredibally rapid rate, and we now have digital systems for just a few hundred dollars. It may sound like alot, but if you are truly wanting to monitor your child daily then a digital system will be worth the investment.

Digital Nanny cams can be placed just as inconspicuously as their analog counterparts, but are maintained much more easily. The cameras can be connected to a computer to DVR ether by cable or wirelessly to a USB connector. The wireless connector transmits to a USB receiver that plugs right into your computer. If the images are transferring to a computer, you can access it from any computer (or have it sent to your cell phone or email address) with the use of a password. When the recordings are connected to a DVR, you have nearly unlimited storage and a convenient way to skim each day’s happenings.

Having a Nanny cam monitoring your home comes with a responsibility to watch the recordings. Fortunately, digital technology has made that responsibility a bit easier to tackle.

Installing a camera to monitor the workings of your home whole you are away is an important decision, and no decision is without its pros and cons. It is always helpful to gather all the information possible about a method of action before you continue. In this case, it is necessary to discuss that information with your spouse and, in most cases, your care provider before installing a nanny cam. While it may be beneficial for some families to use a nanny cam, others may weigh the disadvantages over the advantages.

The pros of monitoring your child care giver a generally obvious. Every parent would like to keep a watchful eye on their children at all times. Ensuring our child’s safety at all times is one of the foremost goals of being a parent. And not only their safety, but making sure they are generally cared for in the way you would like is important as well. Catching nannies “in the act” is not the sole benefit of nanny cams, though it may seem as much. Often times, child care providers are the sole witness to the many milestones and just-plain-cute things your child does during the day.Recordings of these moments can easily be seen and preserved so you don’t miss a moment of their childhood.

Nanny cams may seem flawless on the surface, but there are a few disadvantages to mention. Hiding a camera without informing your nanny may cause feelings of distrust, and you may potentially lose a great employee over a simple miscommunication. However, over-communication may also pose problems. If your nanny is doing things she’d like to hide and you’ve informed her of the location of your cameras, she may well move the activities to a different room. Wireless cameras are also a potential concern, as they may be (legally!) tapped by outsiders.

Learning all the workings of surveillance and potential resuls of each possibility are vital to our decision making process. Thoroughly discuss your situation with all necessary parties to form a system that will benefit all involved.

Our Age of Information is producing technological advancementsby the harddrive-full. Each time a product is released that makes an everyday action simpler, you can be sure another will follow closely behind it that is even cheaper and easier. That is what we are experiencing in the world of surveillance- namely, nanny cams. The ability to watch our children at all times was phenomenal; hiding the cameras in everday objects was even better. Having a cassette recording of every event occurring in our homes was great; recording it digitally was amazing. Now, we can do away with the cables and cords that electronics used to automatically include and replace them with wireless systems.

The idea to place Nanny cams in typical household objects was right on the line, but a teddy bear with a cord coming from its tail might be a tad conspicuous. That led developers to implement the use of capabilities to creat wireless Nanny cams. Cameras can now have only a USB connector rather than a full cord. The USB transmits its information (the workings of your household) directly to the USB receiver that you can plug into a Digital Video Recorder or home computer. The images can then be viewed remotely from any computer location (locked with a password), or at any time on your DVR.

Concerns have arisen with wireless Nanny cams, as all new technology has “bugs” to be worked out. It is a possibility that the transmission from camera to receiver can be intercepted by outsiders with the right technology. The images can be used to spy on your household and potentially used to harm your family. Unfortunately, there are not yet laws on the transmission of video, only audio. Discussing this possibility with your family and sales person before purchase may be a good idea. Another concern may be the issue of cost, but that is also a disadvantage you will need to weigh with the benefits.

Families who are able to check on their children at any time and who have stoppe negative behavior before it went too far will say that wireless Nanny cams were well worth the investment. After discussing it with your family, you may find it is right for you as well.

Speak softly and carry a big stick.” -Teddy Roosevelt

The Teddy Bear is finally living up to the words of its namesake. Nanny cams have made their way to the beloved stuffed toy. The use of obvious cameras result in an obvious disadvantage. If indeed your nanny or sitter cannot be trusted, the undesired behavior may take place out of the camera’s view. An object such as a teddy bear is quite common in any home, especially one with children, and will probably not be suspected as a recording device.

The cameras placed in teddy bears are called “Pinhole” cameras because of their size. These cameras placed in teddy bear nanny cams are designed to record a surprising amount of space despite their small size. The recordings are generally transmitted through wireless adapters and can be viewed on a DVR or from any computer. You have many options when choosing a teddy bear nanny cam including resolution, color vs black and white and if you would like audio. Keep in mind that it is legal to record video with or without a person’s consent, but recording audio may not be allowed in your state.

You do need to be aware of a few things when using a teddy bear Nanny cam. First, it needs to be placed on a shelf or in some stationary position. This is not a bear that is for playing and cuddling. Its purpose is to comfort you, not your child. In order to promote anonymity, you may want to place it on a shelf with other “pretties” and things that are not usually moved. You also need to research the quality of a cheaper camera. While micro-cameras are a reliable technology, they are still developing. You will generally get what you pay for. Finally, while it is legal to record your home and those working in it without their permission, you need to consider the ramifications of such an action. It may be that your sitter is fine with being recorded, just not with being recorded secretly. Talking with your cargiver will maintain an open relationship between you and may give a clue as to whether she has something to hide.

The soft, sweet teddy bear is now equipped with a “big stick,” accountability between you and your child’s care provider.

Placing a Nanny cam in your home is thought to be for the sole purpose of catching abusive behavior; but even if you don’t have the slightest suspect of abuse or neglect, a Nanny cam may still be beneficial to your family. Reasons for setting up hidden cameras can be divided into three groups: a connection, a concern and accountability.

The lighter of the three reasons, a connection with your child is a strong motivator in Nanny cam purchases. Working long hours can make you feel distanced from your child’s everyday acheivements. Nanny cams provide a simple way to capture those first steps when only the caregiver would’ve enoyed them, otherwise. Sometimes just a glance of his happy, one-toothed smile can lighten even the toughest workload. Parents and children were meant to be together often; but if you aren’t able to be with your child as often as you’d like, a Nanny cam offers closeness from distance.

No one likes to think their child is being harmed in any way, but it can happen while we are least expecting it. A concern of abuse or neglect is a very substantial reason to consider Nanny cams. Warning signs of physical abuse include unexplained and sometimes repeated wounds and a fear of the care provider. Excessive fussiness or abnormal crying has also led parents to discover abuse. If your child’s demeanor has drastically changed- i.e., becoming clingy or withdrawn- you may be seeing signs of emotional or sexual abuse. If you strongly suspect abuse, a Nanny cam may reveal the culprit. These signs can be difficult to decipher, but a parent generally knows when something is wrong with their child.

Finally, the best reason to set up a Nanny cam in your home is accountability. The most probable situation is that you have a wonderful caregiver who loves your children and cares for them as you would. Even if that is the case, added accountability can never hurt. Reviewing your recordings a few minutes a day (fast-forwarding through the uneventful parts) can reveal aspects that may need to change or things that can be rewarded. If there is a problem she is experiencing, you viewing it “first” hand can ensure precise solutions are formed.

Whether or not you suspect an abusive situation, if your child is cared for at home then a Nanny cam is probably going to be beneficial to you and your care provider.

If you are like millions of working parents, you and your child spend most of your time apart; you at work and she at daycare or school. Especially in younger children, many developmental milestones are reached when you aren’t there to cheer her along. This makes it difficult enough to drop your children off for another person to care for them, much less with the constantly surfacing reports of child neglect and abuse in daycare systems.

Sometimes, it is possible for parents to visit their children at daycare to check up on them. If you have a child that is difficult to leave at daycare in the morning and you are spotted, you may have trouble on your hands when it is time to leave. Some facicilities are placing one-way glass facing into their rooms so parents can stop by unnoticed by children and teachers, but not all parents are able to drop by during the day. These concerns have taken the Nanny cam from bedrooms in homes to playrooms at daycares all over the country.

Daycare surveillance systems can be costly to the provider- upwards of $10,000, depending on the size- so there may be an extra fee for the parents associated with a monitoring system. Some parents feel that since they already pay quite a bit for daycare, they don’t want the extra cost; others believe they should have access to constant monitoring since they do pay so much for the childcare service. In anycase, parents whose children’s daycare offers surveillance cameras are not disappointed.

Leaving your child at daycare can feel like leaving your heart as well. Surveillance systems have given parents the ability to be included in their childrens’ day. They are able to watch their children interact with their peers and teachers, thus enabling parents and teachers to have a reliable foundation when discussing issues that may arise. The cameras provide liability for both parents and caregivers, ensuring that no one is falsely accused of mistreatment of children and that no one mistreats children. Some seem concerned that predators may access the recordings, but a reliable site will be securely password protected and have no mention of the daycare’s location.

If your child’s daycare does not provide surveillance, it may be something you’d like to discuss with the Director; they might just be waiting for parents’ interest.

You’ve employed the same nanny since your oldest was one year old. She is wonderful with the children, and you enjoy her company during the off-hours. You’ve never really had a reason to distrust her, but neither did the growing number of parents whose children were neglected or even abused by their beloved caregivers. That concern has led you and your spouse to decide to place nanny cams in your home. What will your nanny think if and/or when she finds out?

Many caregivers, especially ones with nothing to hide, are comfortable with the idea of being monitored while working. A big part of her reaction will be dependent upon your relationship to this point. If you have treated her as an employee to this point, surveillance may seem a natural course of action. If she has been more of a family friend doing your family a favor, a nannycam may seem to be an offensive lack of trust. This is not to say you can’t have a friendly relationship with your child’s care giver, but you should not ignore the reason she is working for you.

The main concern that caregivers have expressed regarding nanny cams is a lack of communication. Nannies that would be fine with surveillance if you informed them may be opposed to a camera they are unaware is operating. This “secrecy” might make her feel as though you don’t trust her specifically and that it is a personal matter. It may be in your best interest to inform your care provider that you are installing cameras in the home, and that it is a simple matter of security and nothing against her personally. Her reaction may give you an idea of whether or not she is the nanny for your family.

Some caregivers may have a problem with video monitoring no matter the situation. This may be a red flag to you indicating that there could be something she is hiding. Keep in mind that hidden cameras are completely legal whether or not the employee is informed. If you feel that monitoring your child is your top priority, then whether or not that particular nanny is comfortable with it will be a non-issue. You can always find another nanny; you can never replace your child.

When you hire a nanny or babysitter to work in your home, you become an employer and your home becomes a workplace. In a typical work environment, though, there is- at the very least- some supervision, if not extended or constant surveillance. Your nanny is working unsupervised and completely under your trust that she is doing her job properly. Hopefully, you have done enough checking and re-checking to be sure your nanny can be trusted. It is sad to say, though, that the mistakes of other nannies have limited the amount we trust our children in the care of another.

As you would with any other employee, you are entitled to monitor your nanny or babysitter to be sure she is working effectively. The desire is increased when you add your child’s safety to the mix. You may be able to tolerate a housekeeper watching television rather than vacuuming; but if your nanny is neglecting your child, you want to be aware of it and take necessary action. Before you install a hidden nanny cam in your home, you may have a few concerns about privacy and legal matters.

In our soceity of freedoms-in-overkill, the legalities of constantly monitoring a person can be taken into question. However, as it is in a typical workplace, hidden cameras (whether or not the employee is aware of it) are completely legal. Though it has been contested, courts have decided that a person does not have a reasonable expectation of privacy while working and, therefore, should have no legal obejection to surveillance. The only stipulation placed on surveillance is the disallowance of audio recording, and then only in fifteen states- California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

In summary, you should treat your relationship to your nanny as employer-employee. Offer a formal application when seeking out a nanny, complete with references. Be sure you thoroughly check each reference before hiring, and consider investing in a background check. If the relationship is as a business from the beginning, it will feel much more natural to monitor your home with a nanny cam.
